Are UK monarchs actually 'elected' by the people? (3min)

Ridiculous as it sounds, this is yet another classic double-talk scheme perpetrated in plain sight.

I came across this idea while researching Charles' oaths and the structure of the coronation. The different parts of the ceremony generally sounded fairly innocuous and logical — the investiture, the enthroning, and so on. The 'Recognition' part sounded to me just as if people were 'recognising' him as the King, almost like a coming-of-age ceremony.

From memory, it was only when I started reading Queen Elizabeth's Coronation Souvenir programme from 1953 that I really started seeing them talking candidly about the idea that they really do see this as an 'election', and apparently back in '53 they weren't ashamed to say it.

There are actually a lot of revealing aspects when reading those older documents, and the 'Royals' were a lot less subtle back then than they are today. Presumably the general public was still pretty enamoured with these guys and so they didn't feel the need to disguise the real nature of these public ceremonies and rituals.
